Hochschild Mining announces Pr Sanjay Sarma to its Board as Independent Non-Executive Director

– UK, London – Hochschild Mining plc (LSE:HOC), announces that Roberto Dañino, who has served on the Board since the Company’s IPO in 2006, will be retiring as a Non-Executive Director and Deputy Chairman at the Company’s Annual General Meeting in May 2017.

In addition, the Company announces that Sanjay Sarma, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been appointed as an independent Non-Executive Director with effect from 1 January 2017.

Eduardo Hochschild, Chairman, commented: “Roberto has played an instrumental role at Hochschild Mining both in the preparation for the Company’s listing in 2006 and over the course of the decade since. Initially serving as a member of the Executive team and, from 2011, as a Non-Executive Director, the Board has benefited enormously from his insight and long-standing support. We are thankful that we will continue to benefit from his presence on the Board in the period leading up to the AGM.

Furthermore, I am delighted that we are announcing today the appointment of Sanjay Sarma, who brings a fresh perspective to the Board given his academic background and a particular interest in innovation within the mining industry. His skills will be a welcome addition to our strategic discussions.”

Following the changes announced above, from 1 January 2017 the Board will comprise 10 Directors of whom seven are independent Non-Executive Directors. At the conclusion of the 2017 AGM when Roberto Dañino and, as previously announced, Nigel Moore will retire from the Board, there will be eight Directors on the Board of whom six will be independent Non-Executive Directors.

Sanjay Sarma is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also the Vice President for Open Learning at MIT and leads efforts such as MIT OpenCourseWare and MITx.

Sanjay was the founder and Chief Technology Officer of OATSystems, which was acquired by Checkpoint Systems in 2008, and has worked at Schlumberger Oilfield Services in Aberdeen, UK, and at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories in Berkeley, California.

Currently Sanjay serves on the boards of several start-up companies including Top Flight Technologies and ESSESS and non-profit organisations such as G1S US and edX, the entity set up by MIT and Harvard to facilitate the distribution of free online education worldwide. Sanjay also advises several national governments and global companies.
